The referee awarded a free-kick and VAR decided against further punishment, allowing the Argentine skipper to remain on the pitch.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>However, former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha felt Messi was fortunate to escape a sending-off.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/>&#8220;It probably should have been a red card in,&#8221; ESPN and former Manchester City player Nedum Onuoha said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>&#8220;And I think the referee\u2019s probably missed it and I understand why the referee\u2019s missed it but for the video system referees to look at that and say \u2018nah that\u2019s all fine there\u2019s nothing more to it\u2019, I personally think that\u2019s worthy of a red card.&#8221;<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>His ESPN colleague Ale Moreno was even more emphatic.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"30\"\/>&#8220;It\u2019s 100 per cent a red card for Lionel Messi, should have been,&#8221; he added.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"32\"\/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Scaloni runs out of superlatives<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"34\"\/>Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni admitted he no longer had enough words to describe his captain.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"37\"\/>&#8220;For 20 years, he\u2019s had us used to seeing things like this, and he inspires everyone who watches him play,&#8221; Scaloni said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"39\"\/>Looking ahead to the next Group J match against Austria, Scaloni said: &#8220;We\u2019re going to take it one game at a time.
