NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi<\/a> (MCD) on Sunday demolished a multi-storey building in the Khanpur area as part of its ongoing drive against unauthorised constructions across the capital following a hotel fire that claimed 21 lives.The action comes in line with chief minister Rekha Gupta’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal constructions and unauthorised activities.The civic body has been carrying out a city-wide enforcement campaign since June 1, during which several properties have been demolished or sealed for violating building regulations.Reacting to the ongoing action, BJP MLA from Malviya Nagar, Satish Upadhyay, said:“To ensure the safety of the people and avoid mishappenings, the Delhi government is carrying out such drives at various parts of the city state.”Since June 1, the MCD has demolished 94 properties and sealed 114 others across Delhi, officials said. The drive gained momentum after a fire at a guest house in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar claimed 21 lives, raising concerns over building safety and illegal commercial operations.According to officials, enforcement teams, supported by Delhi Police, have been carrying out demolition and sealing operations in several parts of the city against properties found violating building bylaws.In the South Zone alone, action has been taken against multiple properties in areas including Said-ul-Azaib, Hauz Rani, Khirki Extension, Savitri Nagar, Khanpur and Gautam Nagar. Since June 1, a total of 41 demolition and sealing actions have been carried out in these localities.Many of the properties targeted during the drive were allegedly involved in unauthorised construction or were being used as bed-and-breakfast establishments and commercial facilities without complying with prescribed regulations and safety standards, officials said.The MCD said it has also issued 158 notices since June 1, including notices related to unauthorised construction, sealing and demolition orders.<\/div>\n
