{"id":17244,"date":"2026-06-05T22:44:44","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T17:14:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/banitoday.com\/meet-the-pastors-who-support-the-ice-raids\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T22:44:44","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T17:14:44","slug":"meet-the-pastors-who-support-the-ice-raids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/banitoday.com\/hi\/meet-the-pastors-who-support-the-ice-raids\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the pastors who support the ICE raids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Everlit Audio Player\" src=\"https:\/\/everlit.audio\/embeds\/artl_AKz7lT9Mpna?ui_title_intro=Listen+now%3A&amp;client=wp&amp;client_version=3.1.5\" width=\"100%\" height=\"136px\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(RNS) \u2014 Pastors and other clergy have made headlines over the past year for their roles in protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement crackdowns in places such as <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/03\/30\/his-arrest-went-viral-now-rev-michael-woolf-is-preaching-what-he-calls-sanctuary-values\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago<\/a> and Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/12\/24\/nx-s1-5619298\/how-the-clergy-has-rallied-against-the-trump-administrations-immigration-policies\">hit by pepper balls<\/a> and tear gas during protests; <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/04\/03\/after-lengthy-court-battles-clergy-finally-visit-immigrant-detainees-in-illinois-and-minnesota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sued to gain access<\/a> to ICE facilities and<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> <\/span>to <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/02\/16\/judge-mostly-bars-immigration-raids-at-a-group-of-churches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">block ICE raids<\/a> on houses of worship; and called on their flocks to welcome immigrants, not fear them. Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/01\/22\/hundreds-of-clergy-descend-on-minneapolis-and-go-on-lookout-for-ice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hundreds of clergy flocked<\/a> to Minneapolis for a<a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/01\/23\/inside-the-effort-to-organize-clergy-nationwide-to-resist-ice-minneapolis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> two-day training<\/a> on how to resist ICE.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Garlow is not one of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not wrong for a government to have borders and to enforce its borders,\u201d said Garlow, the former longtime pastor of Skyline Church near San Diego and founder of Well Versed, a ministry to conservative politicians such as U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>Garlow is part of a group of evangelical clergy who, invoking Scripture and morality, support the Trump administration\u2019s immigration policies. Some say they back deportation only for those with criminal records. Jim Garlow, second from left, are among the staunchest supporters of Trump\u2019s immigration policies (Official White House Photo)<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>That view will likely be debated during the upcoming Southern Baptist Convention meeting, set for Tuesday and Wednesday (June 9 and 10) in Orlando, Florida. A <a href=\"https:\/\/sbcannualmeeting.net\/\">proposed resolution<\/a> for the meeting approves of \u201clawful immigration enforcement\u201d and affirms that \u201cChristian compassion and hospitality do not negate lawful order or excuse indifference to public justice and social peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike previous statements on immigration from the nation\u2019s largest Protestant denomination, the new resolution makes no mention of a path to legal status for those in the country without it.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the SBC\u2019s public policy entity <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2025\/09\/18\/erlc-breaks-from-evangelical-immigration-table\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">withdrew<\/a> from the Evangelical Immigration Table, which supports immigration reform, in part because the issue had become too divisive. (That SBC entity, known as the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/evangelicals-rally-for-immigration-reform\">had helped found<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2013\/04\/15\/177276881\/evangelicals-try-to-soften-hearts-on-overhauling-immigration\">EIT<\/a> back in 2013.)<\/p>\n<p>Dean Inserra, pastor of the Tallahassee-based City Church, a Southern Baptist congregation, told RNS in an interview that while the Bible commands Christians to treat everyone with respect, there are still limits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristians get in trouble when they say all people are made in the image of God, so that means that there\u2019s a free-for-all and we should have open borders,\u201d Inserra said. \u201cWell, the same Bible where you claim that we should care for the immigrant, which the Bible does say, is the same Bible that has borders and nations and walls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sees no contradiction between saying all people are made in God\u2019s image and deserve respect and care and saying that laws should be enforced. Rice said he respects immigrants, especially their perseverance, and appreciates the struggles that they overcome in relocating from their home countries to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>But he also said that he believes in the rule of law and that countries need to have secure borders and an orderly immigration process. The hard part, he said, is figuring out what to do with folks living in the country without legal status. Removing them is going to be painful and complicated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody knows that when you engage in deportation, there are going to be difficult, heart-wrenching, gut-wrenching cases,\u201d he said. \u201cI know that the laws should be enforced. I hope they\u2019re applied justly and fairly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like other pastors interviewed by RNS, Rice said much of the blame for the current tensions over immigration should fall on past administrations for failing to secure the border. That\u2019s allowed the number of people in the country without full legal status to grow. (AP Photo\/Abbie Parr)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For progressive pastors, ICE\u2019s crackdown in Minneapolis earlier this year, which resulted in the killing of two Americans, galvanized opposition to ICE and the Trump agenda. Evangelical pastors like Rice say the situation in Minneapolis was chaotic, but they place more blame on protesters than on ICE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they don\u2019t show you are the people stalking ICE, mocking them, getting in the way, trying to interfere with the just enforcement of law,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was particularly concerned about an anti-ICE protest at Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, that disrupted a worship service. That church is part of the SBC, and one of its lay leaders works for ICE. (Video screen grab, courtesy of the Center for Baptist Leadership)<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear how many or how deeply pastors support the Trump immigration crackdown.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/research.lifeway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-Pastors-Views-on-Immigration-Report-for-Release.pdf\">recent survey<\/a> from Lifeway Research, an evangelical research firm, found that nearly 1 in 5 Protestant pastors (18%) believes the number of deportations in the U.S. should be increased, while 1 in 4 (24%) believes the government is deporting the right number of people. A March <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/03\/26\/survey-support-for-trumps-handling-of-immigration-craters-with-all-faith-groups-especially-white-mainliners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from Public Religion Research Institute found that while the Trump administration\u2019s approach to immigration is unpopular with most faith groups, evangelicals remain strong supporters.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/03\/30\/his-arrest-went-viral-now-rev-michael-woolf-is-preaching-what-he-calls-sanctuary-values\/\">His arrest went viral. Michael Woolf is preaching what he calls \u2018Sanctuary values.\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>As the threat of deportation increases for all immigrants, <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/05\/20\/amid-calls-for-criminal-deportations-a-catholic-sister-stands-for-mercy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catholic bishops as well as immigrant advocates<\/a> have <a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2025\/11\/12\/at-meeting-us-catholic-bishops-say-they-oppose-indiscriminate-mass-deportation-of-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushed back<\/a> and said deportations should be reserved for convicted criminals.<\/p>\n<p>But some of the evangelical pastors who are staunch supporters of the Trump immigration agenda go much further, seeing large-scale immigration as an existential threat to U.S. culture and calling for the mass deportation of anyone in the country without legal status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think all of them need to go,\u201d said Joe Rigney, an associate pastor at Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho, and author of \u201cThe Sin of Empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rather than joining protest lines, pastors should be encouraging those in the country without legal status to self-deport, Rigney said. That\u2019s better than waiting for ICE to come and arrest them.<\/p>\n<p>He points to what he calls a \u201cvery generous\u201d offer made by the Trump administration to immigrants who will self-deport \u2014 a free flight and a cash bonus of $1,000. He argues that the changes to immigration law in 1965, after what\u2019s known as the Hart-Celler Act passed, were a mistake. That law opened up immigration from Asia and Africa \u2014 before then, the law favored immigrants from Europe. This past week, Republican Congressman Andy Ogles of Tennessee, a fierce opponent of immigration, <a href=\"https:\/\/ogles.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/house-conservative-unveils-bill-end-chain-migration-scrap-diversity-visa\">introduced a bill<\/a> to repeal most of the 1965 law.<\/p>\n<p>Rigney believes the 1965 law eroded America\u2019s common culture. That and the decline of religion in America \u2014 about 30% of Americans claim no religious affiliation \u2014 has made it harder to hold disparate groups of Americans together, Rigney told RNS in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou end up with what we have now,\u201d he said. \u201cWhich is largely a kind of balkanization, where multiple tribes are competing and vying for political and cultural power in the country, because we don\u2019t know what we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He argues that a moratorium on all immigration would give the country time to rebuild \u201ca common culture.\u201d That common culture has to be Christian, in his view, echoing sentiments raised by Doug Wilson, the senior pastor of Christ Church, a church widely seen as Christian nationalist and with ties to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJesus is the only hope of finding a cultural core,\u201d Rigney said.<\/p>\n<p>To Rigney, mass immigration to the United States is a judgment from God for the decline in religious affiliation in the country. \u201cWe\u2019ve turned away from God, and now, with the aid of our political leaders, are being overrun by foreigners. Like, that\u2019s, that\u2019s, this is a judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He has little faith that people from different cultures can learn to live together. \u201cIf you are constantly saying that we\u2019re going to just be from all different cultures, all different religions, all different languages, and just good luck everybody \u2014 I just think that\u2019s a recipe for resentment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That view likely goes too far for many evangelicals. The proposed new SBC resolution, for example, supports legal immigration and rejects \u201cnativism, racial or ethnic hostility, ethno-nationalism, discrimination, and all ideologies or rhetoric that deny the equal worth and dignity of any people group, regardless of immigration status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inserra, whose great-grandparents immigrated to the U.S. from Italy, said immigrants are good for the country. His relatives emigrated in search of a better life, and he is glad they did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a non-Christian posture to try to say that people coming to this country for the sole purpose of finding a better life is a threat to our culture,\u201d he said. \u201cI just don\u2019t think that\u2019s Christian or American.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Esther Valdes Clayton, an immigration lawyer and <a href=\"https:\/\/fox5sandiego.com\/video\/immigration-attorney-esther-valdes-clayton-discusses-ice-cracking-down-on-deportation-and-penalties\/10912559\/\">daughter of a Southern Baptist pastor<\/a> who emigrated from Mexico, often advises pastors and evangelical churches about immigration. Garlow, for example, said he often recommends her as an expert for speaking to churches.<\/p>\n<p>Clayton disagrees with calls to end all immigration. She said the country needs new immigrants. (Video screen grab)<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But there should be more ways for immigrants to enter the country legally, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Clayton believes that illegal immigration hurts immigrants, saying she has frequently seen immigrant clients who have been victims of abuse, often because of their lack of legal status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmigrants feel the brunt of criminal illegal immigration, more than everybody else,\u201d she said. \u201cTheir kids are the ones sexually abused. Their kids are the ones living in poverty. So, by and large, most everyone understands that enforcement has to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also supports workplace raids on companies that employ those who are in the country illegally. Those companies, she said, exploit Hispanic workers, seeing them as cheap labor. She also says that churches need to stop fighting ICE enforcement, especially when it comes to deporting those with criminal backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to stop defending the criminals that live in our communities. They need to go home. They have no right, and there\u2019s no way to legalize them in America,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She, like Rigney, has concerns about the impact of unfettered immigration on national identity, saying the influx of non-Christians is making the country less Christian. \u201cAmerica, as the last bastion of Christianity, must win this, and we must be able to defend our border,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But Clayton wants the Trump administration to be more lenient, especially with the families of members of the U.S. military. \u201cThey need to stop deporting the parents and spouses of military servicemen and women and veterans,\u201d said Clayton, who has represented military family members in court. \u201cI think every single American wants that to stop. And I do too. That\u2019s easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garlow, who was a faith adviser to President Donald Trump during his first term, also wants to see the immigration system reformed. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/ReVERSED-Culturally-Woke-Biblically-Awake\/dp\/B0DGTYYLSM\">\u201cRe-Versed,\u201d<\/a> his 2016 book about the Bible and the government, Garlow laid out his vision.<\/p>\n<p>Immigrants who are in the country illegally, he told RNS, should pay \u201ca reasonable fine,\u201d take classes in speaking English and citizenship, be \u201ctaught allegiance to America\u201d and then be granted legal status.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the government should apologize \u201cfor letting people in and then saying \u2018you\u2019re illegal.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in a sign of how the immigration debate has shifted within the evangelical movement, Garlow no longer believes that vision he laid out 10 years ago is realistic. The country, he said, is too polarized for politicians to cooperate on immigration reform.<\/p>\n<p>Now he thinks that immigrants should self-deport if they are in the country illegally but should be able to return through a legal process \u2014 especially if they have family in the country or job opportunities. <span>Current immigration law <\/span><span draggable=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tracreports.org\/tracker\/dynadata\/2023_08\/IF12484.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bars<\/a><\/span><span> those who self-deport for at least three years and as many as 20 years or more, depending on how long they had been in the country without permission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur country ought to work with them because they have got roots here,\u201d Garlow said.<\/p>\n<p>But self-deporting should come first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that easy?\u201d he said. \u201cOf course not, but I think the government could treat them in an honorable way.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- CONTENT END 1 -->\n        <\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/religionnews.com\/2026\/06\/05\/meet-the-pastors-who-support-ice\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(RNS) \u2014 Pastors and other clergy have made headlines over the past year for their roles in protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement crackdowns in places such as Chicago and Minneapolis.
