Archer will miss the first match of the series at Lord’s after recently completing his IPL commitments with Rajasthan Royals<\/a>, who reached the playoffs before being knocked out.The pacer\u2019s unavailability has drawn criticism from some former players and pundits, who believe England should be his top priority given his central contract with the national team. Questions have also been raised about whether Archer will be fit and available for the second Test later this month.Stokes acknowledged that some fans and former cricketers may be frustrated, but said modern cricket is very different from what it was years ago because players now have opportunities to play in franchise leagues around the world.\u201cA lot of the points that people would be making around Jof and that situation I think are to do with the landscape back when they were playing,\u201d Stokes said. “It\u2019s completely different now. There\u2019s opportunities for cricketers now that there wasn\u2019t 10, 15, 20 years ago. Yes, in an ideal situation, it would be unbelievably great to have everyone who you want available every single opportunity. But it\u2019s not the way of cricket at the moment. There\u2019s so much more out there for players.\u201dThe England skipper stressed that the cricketing landscape has changed and teams need to adapt rather than expect players to always be available.Stokes also warned that handling situations like Archer\u2019s poorly could push talented players away from international cricket altogether.\u201cThere is a situation where it could get messy, and players like Jofra might not play for England again if you handle it a different way,\u201d Stokes said, “and that\u2019s not good for anyone.\u201cJof, I think, has shown that he is committed and loves playing for England. Just because he\u2019s not available for this first test match does not change that.\u201dArcher is currently taking a short break before being assessed ahead of the remaining matches in the series.<\/div>\n
