{"id":16402,"date":"2026-06-03T20:25:31","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T14:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/banitoday.com\/catholic-sisters-push-palantir-on-human-rights-as-faith-leaders-rally-in-new-york\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T20:25:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T14:55:31","slug":"catholic-sisters-push-palantir-on-human-rights-as-faith-leaders-rally-in-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/banitoday.com\/hi\/catholic-sisters-push-palantir-on-human-rights-as-faith-leaders-rally-in-new-york\/","title":{"rendered":"Catholic sisters push Palantir on human rights as faith leaders rally in New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Everlit Audio Player\" src=\"https:\/\/everlit.audio\/embeds\/artl_NKDzNi7jNrP?ui_title_intro=Listen+now%3A&amp;client=wp&amp;client_version=3.1.5\" width=\"100%\" height=\"136px\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>NEW YORK (RNS) \u2014 Catholic sisters, investors and immigrant rights activists plan to rally on Wednesday (June 3) outside of Palantir Technologies\u2019 New York office, 30 minutes before the company holds it annual general meeting and considers a shareholders\u2019 proposal calling on Palantir to conduct a human rights review of its work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re investors, but we\u2019re also Catholics,\u201d said Sister Susan Francois, assistant congregation leader and treasurer of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace and the lead filer of the shareholder proposal, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csjp.org\/news\/2026\/2\/25\/pltr\">Proposal 5<\/a>. \u201cWhen we see potential risks to the company that are also causing harm to the human community, we feel that it is of a moral and business imperative to raise the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Proposal 5 calls on Palantir to conduct and publish a human rights impact assessment of its work, which includes selling artificial intelligence tools to U.S. and foreign militaries and governments. Last year <span>Palantir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/palantir-ceo-defends-surveillance-tech-us-government-contracts-boost-sales-2026-02-02\/\">won a contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement <\/a>to develop surveillance systems for\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/palantir-defies-tech-gloom-trump-momentum-powers-stellar-share-gains-2025-06-03\/\" data-testid=\"Link\">immigration enforcement<\/a><span>.<\/span><span class=\"T286Pc\" data-sfc-cp=\"\" jsaction=\"\" jscontroller=\"fly6D\" data-sfc-root=\"c\" jsuid=\"mzuZEf_x\" data-sfc-cb=\"\" data-copy-service-computed-style=\"font-family: &quot;Google Sans&quot;, Roboto, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; margin: 0px; text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 0px rgb(10, 10, 10);\"><span class=\"yADgie\" data-copy-service-computed-style=\"font-family: &quot;Google Sans&quot;, Roboto, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400; margin: 0px; text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 0px rgb(10, 10, 10);\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Proposal 5 raises concerns about Palantir\u2019s work with ICE and the Department of Homeland Security, as well as the privacy implications of its use of health and other personal data.<\/p>\n<p>Immigrant community members, activists, investors and faith leaders plan to rally Wednesday outside Palantir\u2019s office at 620 Sixth Ave. in New York beginning at 9:30 a.m., just 30 minutes before the annual meeting. (Photo by Salvador Rios\/Unsplash\/Creative Commons)<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In his recently published encyclical, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/leo-xiv\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/20260515-magnifica-humanitas.html\">Magnifica Humanitas<\/a>,\u201d Pope Leo XIV warned against technologies that reduce people to data, and he called for standards based on \u201cthe dignity of the human person,\u201d care for the poor, peace and the \u201cassessment of human and social impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe economy is meant to serve the people of God, not to harm the people of God, and so economics is always tied to faith,\u201d Francois said. \u201cWe cannot separate our economic life and our technological life from the pursuit of the common good, and that is what my faith is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Acosta, program director at Investor Advocates for Social Justice, said Proposal 5 could be defeated with low overall support because of Palantir\u2019s insider voting power. But he said that result may not reflect how independent shareholders view the proposal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iasj.org\/investors-send-palantir-letter-regarding-its-human-rights-impacts\/\">On May 14<\/a>, 34 investors representing what they say is more than $336 billion in assets sent a letter to Palantir\u2019s board expressing concern about what they called insufficient due diligence and transparency regarding use of the company\u2019s products.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/comptroller.nyc.gov\/newsroom\/nyc-comptroller-mark-levine-calls-for-oversight-of-palantirs-involvement-with-the-department-of-homeland-security-and-u-s-immigration-and-customs-enforcement\/\">In February<\/a>, the New York City comptroller urged Palantir to commission an independent human rights risk assessment related to its work with DHS and ICE. ABP, the Netherlands\u2019 largest pension fund, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-humanrights.org\/en\/latest-news\/dutch-pension-fund-divests-from-palantir-citing-social-responsibility\/\">recently divested<\/a> from Palantir, while pension funds in several U.S. states are reportedly facing pressure from beneficiaries to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is a good signal that investors are waking up and more willing to speak out against what they perceive as injustices or human rights violations,\u201d Acosta said.<\/p>\n<p>Francois said the goal is not simply to win.
