But the proposed deal is still awaiting President Donald Trump’s final approval. Trump, according to officials cited in the report, wants “a few days” to think it over. The proposed arrangement would mark the clearest sign yet that both Washington and Tehran recognize the limits of military escalation after months of naval warfare, sanctions, air strikes and economic disruption that have rattled global energy markets and exhausted nations near and far.Under the emerging framework, the ceasefire would formally continue while unrestricted commercial shipping resumes through the Strait of Hormuz. The US Navy would gradually lift its blockade operations, Iranian harassment of shipping would halt, and both sides would open talks on sanctions relief, frozen Iranian funds and humanitarian access to Iran. The nuclear issue — the central trigger for the war — would move to the front of the agenda during the 60-day negotiating period. Iran would reportedly commit not to pursue a nuclear weapon while discussions continue over uranium enrichment, stockpiles and monitoring mechanisms. Iran has not confirmed any of these claims in the Axios report. The military escalation came after President Trump again mixed threats with diplomacy in a manner that has become characteristic of the conflict. During a Cabinet meeting, Trump threatened Oman — historically one of Washington’s most trusted intermediaries with Tehran — warning that Muscat would “behave” or face consequences after reports emerged that Omani officials were exploring mechanisms to help administer commercial traffic through Hormuz. At the same time, Trump publicly insisted that the Strait would soon reopen fully and repeatedly suggested Iran now understood that America would maintain overwhelming military pressure indefinitely if necessary. The contradictory messaging — escalation one hour, diplomacy the next — has become a defining feature of the war and a growing source of frustration for nations across Europe, Asia and the Gulf. For countries such as India, Japan and South Korea, the Hormuz disruption has become a strategic nightmare.Tanker insurance costs have soared, shipping schedules remain chaotic and governments are scrambling for alternate energy supplies even as they privately urge Washington and Tehran to step back from the brink. The economic consequences are now reaching ordinary Americans as well. Gasoline prices across the U.S are in the $ 4.50 per gallon (approx Rs 1.15 per liter) adding fresh political pressure ahead of midterm elections in November, although Trump said he was not particularly concerned about the polls.Republican strategists privately acknowledge growing voter fatigue with a conflict that was initially presented as a short campaign to force Iranian concessions but has instead evolved into a grinding war of attrition involving naval blockades, drone attacks and recurring brinkmanship over one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints.Yet Trump himself appears invested in demonstrating endurance rather than compromise, insisting that Iran is under severe military and economic strain and is “negotiating on fumes.”Iran, on its part, is betting Trump lacks the patience for prolonged conflict and mounting domestic political costs. That may now be the war’s defining calculation: not which side can win outright, but which side can absorb pain longer.Even the emerging MOU reflects that reality. It is less a peace treaty than a mutual pause — an acknowledgment that both powers may need temporary relief from a confrontation that has disrupted global trade, destabilized energy markets and steadily raised the risk of a broader regional war.

Source link

TOI correspondent from Washington: Just hours after the US and Iran exchanged verbal salvoes and fresh attacks in and around the Strait of Hormuz, the two sides are simultaneously reported to be inching towards a diplomatic breakthrough yet again.According to Axios, US and Iranian negotiators have reached agreement on a draft Memorandum of Understanding extending […]

[299

post-13817","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-latest-news
["GET
