{"id":11505,"date":"2026-05-02T02:59:26","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T21:29:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/banitoday.com\/capex-push-stays-despite-fiscal-stress-govt-to-retain-rs-12-22-lakh-crore-spend-amid-global-uncertainty\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T02:59:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T21:29:26","slug":"capex-push-stays-despite-fiscal-stress-govt-to-retain-rs-12-22-lakh-crore-spend-amid-global-uncertainty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/banitoday.com\/hi\/capex-push-stays-despite-fiscal-stress-govt-to-retain-rs-12-22-lakh-crore-spend-amid-global-uncertainty\/","title":{"rendered":"Capex push stays despite fiscal stress: Govt to retain Rs 12.22 lakh crore spend amid global uncertainty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"e9jwa\">\n<div class=\"vdo_embedd\">\n<div class=\"GfdvZ\">\n<section class=\"_bIDB  clearfix id-r-component leadmedia undefined undefined  E9tg9 \" style=\"top:0px\">\n<div class=\"_bIDB\" data-ua-type=\"1\" onclick=\"stpPgtnAndPrvntDefault(event)\">\n<div class=\"ypVvZ\">\n<div class=\"WGttI\"><img src=\"https:\/\/static.toiimg.com\/thumb\/msid-130675568,imgsize-554106,width-400,height-225,resizemode-4\/-.jpg\" alt=\"Capex push stays despite fiscal stress: Govt to retain Rs 12.22 lakh crore spend amid global uncertainty\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The government will continue with its planned capital expenditure of Rs 12.22 lakh crore in the current fiscal to sustain growth momentum despite rising fiscal stress linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict, a senior finance ministry official said on Friday, reported PTI.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"2\"\/>Expenditure Secretary V Vualnam said capital spending would remain a priority even as the economy faces multiple pressure points in the coming quarters.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"4\"\/>\u201cThe fiscal stress is indeed very much a reality, but at the same time&#8230; the capex would really be a priority item, which we would like to preserve and ensure that it continues at the budgeted level,\u201d Vualnam said at the ICPP Growth Conference organised by Ashoka University.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"8\"\/>He said the next few months and the coming year may see \u201ca lot of stress points\u201d, with tax buoyancy also likely to come under pressure.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"10\"\/>Tax collections could be impacted after the government cut excise duties on petrol and diesel in late March to contain domestic fuel prices amid the crude oil surge.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"12\"\/>The excise duty reduction is estimated to cost the exchequer around Rs 7,000 crore for a 15-day period.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"14\"\/>Vualnam said highways, railways, shipping, ports and urban development would be the key focus sectors for FY27 capital expenditure.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"17\"\/>Referring to the global backdrop, he said uncertainties have created a \u201cvery challenging situation\u201d for India, especially as the country remains a net importer of petroleum products.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"19\"\/>Since the start of the West Asia war on February 28, crude oil prices have jumped to a four-year high of $126 a barrel on Thursday from around $73 before the conflict began.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"21\"\/>India imports 60 per cent of its LPG requirement, and of that, 90 per cent passes through the now-closed Strait of Hormuz, he said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"24\"\/>\u201cIt would be a very challenging situation,\u201d the secretary added.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"26\"\/>He said the government has remained proactive and has responded to changing conditions with agility.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"28\"\/>India\u2019s fiscal prudence has placed the country in a stronger position to manage current uncertainty, he said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"30\"\/>\u201cWe will, on our part, be committed to see that the required funds are provided in spite of all the stress points that may come up,\u201d Vualnam said.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"33\"\/>The FY27 Budget has pegged the fiscal deficit at 4.3 per cent of GDP, though it is now seen at 4.5 per cent after a downward revision in India\u2019s nominal GDP under the new series.<span class=\"id-r-component br\" data-pos=\"35\"\/>The Centre has also imposed an export duty of Rs 23 per litre on diesel and Rs 33 per litre on aviation turbine fuel to ensure adequate domestic supply.
