Rachel Goldberg-Polin is a perfect example.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas kidnapped her son, <span>Hersh Goldberg-Polin,<\/span> 23, from the Nova Music Festival. He lost part of his arm. Hamas held him as a hostage in the tunnels of Gaza. In Rachel\u2019s words, he was \u201ctortured, tormented, starved, abused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After 328 days in captivity, they executed him. Rachel must now ask, how do I walk through this place without a piece of me here?<\/p>\n<p>In the summer before Hersh\u2019s death, I walked the streets of Jerusalem. I could not walk 50 yards without seeing posters of the hostages. Hersh\u2019s face appeared again and again. He became the most recognizable hostage. His name jumped off of graffiti: \u201cHersch chai, Hersh lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the tunnels of Gaza, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-843685\">he had lived with these words<\/a> of Holocaust survivor and psychiatrist Viktor Frankl: \u201cThose who have a \u2018why\u2019 to live can bear with almost any \u2018how.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Surviving his ordeal became Hersh\u2019s \u201cwhy.\u201d And saving Hersh became the \u201cwhy\u201d of his parents, Jonathan and Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>The other evening, I watched Anderson Cooper interview Rachel on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XClniyNGfAs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60 Minutes\u201d<\/a> (she was also interviewed by RNS). And Rachel, who believes herself to be a \u201cnobody,\u201d has become the face of faith.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That faith began with the birth of her son. She said in the Cooper interview, \u201cThe universe really knew what it was doing when it said, \u2018Rachel\u2019s gonna have one son \u2026\u00a0 so, this is the one for her.\u2019 I was really blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hersh was joyful, funny, creative and idealistic, as she described. And then, Oct. 7.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sirens started. \u2026 I turned on my phone, and at 8:11 two messages had come in from Hersh,\u201d she said in the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview. \u201cThe first one said, \u2018I love you.\u2019 And the second one said, \u2018I\u2019m sorry.\u2019 And that was it. Everything that had ever happened in my life \u2026 was over. \u2026 I love you. Stay strong. Survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every morning, Rachel said the traditional prayer, thanking God for restoring her soul, thanking God for his faith in her. That is what faith looks like \u2014 a willingness to survive and believing that God reciprocates our faith in the Divine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There were several scenes in the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d report that totally gutted me: a remarkable video of Hamas taking Hersh into captivity, scenes of him in the tunnel and another that will always be with me. Rachel is standing near the border of Gaza, holding a microphone and howling: \u201cHersh! It\u2019s Mama. It\u2019s Day 328. We are all here, the families of the remaining hostages. We are working day and night, and we will never stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And then, she offered him the Priestly Blessing \u2014 \u201cMay God bless you and keep you\u201d \u2014 the blessing with which parents bless their children on Shabbat across the desert.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That is what faith sounds like: screaming into the void, and knowing that there might be no response. It\u2019s like prayer itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ended up finding out they killed him that day. And so I wonder, did he hear me?\u201d Rachel said. \u201cI think there are other ways that you can hear your parents screaming for you, even if you don\u2019t hear them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is what faith feels like \u2014 a stubborn insistence that love still connects us, even across the abyss.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the interview, Cooper asked her: \u201cDo you think you failed?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Rachel: \u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cooper: \u201cYou did more than anybody could possibly do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel: \u201cIt\u2019s true \u2026 and sometimes, 100% is not enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This, again, is what faith looks like \u2014 doing as much as you can, even when it might be fruitless.<\/p>\n<p>Six months ago, on the second day of Rosh Hashana, we Jews read the prophetic passage in which Jeremiah comforts the Jews who had been exiled from Judea:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Thus said the Eternal:<br \/>A voice is heard in Ramah \u2013<br \/>Wailing, bitter weeping \u2013<br \/>Rachel weeping for her children,<br \/>Refusing to be comforted for her children, for they are gone.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is uncanny. The biblical matriarch, Rachel, who had been barren, who prayed for children, who finally gave birth to Jacob\u2019s favorite son, Joseph, and who dies giving birth to Benjamin, weeps for her children who are gone.<\/p>\n<p>But the text from Jeremiah continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Thus said the Eternal:<br \/>Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears,<br \/>For your labor shall have its reward \u2013 declares the Eternal.<br \/>They shall return from the enemy\u2019s land.<br \/>And there is hope for your future \u2013 declares the Eternal \u2013<br \/>Your children shall return to their land.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For my Christian readers, this is like Mary. Rachel Goldberg-Polin turned her unspeakable anguish outward.<\/p>\n<p>When Rachel eulogized her son, she said that she no longer had to worry about him. She spoke of Hersh being safe, being held, being loved. She spoke of the world to come. She spoke of reunion, which is why the title of her new book is \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/824238\/when-we-see-you-again-by-rachel-goldberg-polin\/\">When We See You Again<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who speaks like that? Only someone whose faith does not deny grief, but walks straight through it. Rachel has shown us what it means to cling \u2014 to life, to love, to God \u2014 even when everything shatters. She has shown us that grief can become what she called \u201ca precious badge of love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She has shown us that memory is not just something we carry, but something that carries us.<\/p>\n<p>As Rachel put it: \u201cWe got all these people home, not the way we wanted.
