Now\u200b, church leaders in the country say they want to know what happened to the two, and they\u2019re putting a spotlight on the growing number of disappeared in the country. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s \u200ba\u202fquestion of justice. We want the government to take its responsibility regarding the disappearance of these two. The road cuts through territory where armed men commit deadly robberies, kidnappings and other attacks. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is on this road that the Rev. We need truth, not silence. We want the government to take responsibility regarding the disappearance of these two. Tut Kony Nyang, general secretary of the South Sudan Council of Churches, an ecumenical group that represents the Roman Catholic, Anglican and Presbyterian churches, among others, said death has become normalized in South Sudan. \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is the tune of the day in South Sudan. The disappearances and the losses of people,\u201d he said, adding that churches \u200bare\u202fraising their voices because \u201cwhat we have is just a power of words and ethics.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">He also suggested that the disappearances are linked to militarized politics and ethnic divisions.\u00a0\u201cPeople may disappear because of the tribe they belong to,\u201d he told RNS, suggesting the priest\u00a0may have been\u00a0targeted for that reason.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u200bMbokusa\u202fwas \u200bthe priest in\u202fcharge of the Nazareth Nagero parish in the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio, near the country\u2019s border with Congo and the Central African Republic. Those two African countries \u200bare\u202falso embroiled in conflict.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Of South Sudan\u2019s estimated 12.4 million population, approximately 60% are Christian, with Roman Catholic, Episcopal (Anglican) and Presbyterian denominations being dominant. Map courtesy of Creative Commons<\/span><span class=\"credit\"\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Muslims account for approximately 6%-8%, while there are also tiny populations of Hindu, Baha\u2019i and Jewish religions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although it\u2019s difficult to find exact statistics due to the conflict, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the South Sudan Red Cross said in a recent news release that it was following 5,700 cases of missing persons. The real count is likely higher because the cases are not \u200b\u200bdocumented, said the organizations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mbokusa\u2019s\u202fdisappearance is considered a high-profile incident. The rebel faction, the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement and Army in the Opposition, control\u200bs the area where the two disappeared. The faction has recently engaged in deadly clashes with the national army, the South Sudan Defence Forces, that left at least 250 people dead in Nasir\u200b City in\u202fUpper Nile State.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But much of the violence in the territories is not directly done by the two bigger groups, according to Catholic Bishop Christian Carlassare of Bentiu Diocese. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt is a constellation of groups or local militias responding to local commanders that do not have a national political agenda, but only local claims,\u201d\u00a0Carlassare\u00a0told RNS. \u201cEven in the case of\u00a0Father\u00a0Yugue, I think the attackers might have been local militias.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The bishop said the government and opposition have relied on militias for certain purposes but at times militias turned against them. \u201cPeople are at the mercy of those holding guns, because weapons are power \u2026 used against people,\u201d Carlassare said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pastors and priests are not direct targets, he added, but they may find themselves caught up.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThose with guns may not mind.
