Belagavi: Heavy rainfall in Maharashtra’s Koyna basin has caused Krishna, Vedaganga and Doodhganga rivers to swell, inundating agricultural land in low-lying areas of the Chikodi subdivision in Karnataka.Standing crops, including jowar, black gram and soybean, are feared to be damaged due to prolonged waterlogging.Krishna River is flowing above the danger mark, submerging Beeradevar Temple at Bavanasaudatti, with Doodhganga river submerging Bengalibaba Temple near Karadga village.Water from the Krishna river has entered the sanctum of Datta Mandir in Narasimha Wadi on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border, leading to suspension of services at the shrine.Hiranyakeshi, Malaprabha, and Ghataprabha rivers are also full. Shirur Dam on the Markandeya river near Yamakanmardi is partially full. Six crest gates were opened Monday, releasing 2,500 cusecs of water. As the dam is 92% full, water is being released into the river. A warning has been sounded for residents in areas behind the dam, including Hagedal, Rustumpur, Pashchapur, Mavanoor, and Basapur.Praveen Kumar Aralikatti, the executive officer at Shirur dam, said villagers have been advised to move to safer places.In view of a forecast of continuous rain in the Maharashtra region for the next two days, the Belagavi district administration has warned residents of the river basin to be vigilant.Meanwhile, Karnataka Irrigation Corporation officials said rainfall in the Western Ghats region of Maharashtra decreased by Tuesday afternoon.
