New Delhi: Allegations of using brute force, including pellet guns, as well as male police officers assaulting women were levelled against the Delhi police by those who were part of Monday’s protest march. The police have denied claims made by protesters and the Cockroach Janta Party.Videos shot by protesters showed security personnel in plain clothes, wielding batons and hitting protesters as they broke through barricades. Some protesters were also seen attacking cops.Allegations that additional DCP, northeast Delhi, Sandeep Lamba slapped a woman protester have been made and a purported video of the incident has also been shared by several people on social media, including by CJP.No reaction was available from the police on the video. In an unrelated statement given to a news wire service, Lamba said he sustained a knee injury after being hit by a stone while protesters were pushing against police barricades. “The protesters started pelting stones while trying to breach the barricades. A stone hit my knee and I suffered a blunt injury. My uniform was also torn during the scuffle,” he added.Responding to questions on why personnel in plain clothes, without name tags, were assigned to control protesters, Delhi police officials said many cops from specialised detection units or intelligence wings do not wear uniforms because of their work profile that includes undercover operations. “Many of these cops are roped in for law and order duties during large protests”, sources said. The police did not confirm or respond to allegations of unruly activity by any cop from these units.In an official statement, the All India Students’ Association, which has been part of the Jantar Mantar sit-in for a month, alleged that the police used pellet guns to control the march.“At least 3 people received pellet gun injuries as confirmed by our team,” it said, adding that one of the injured has been advised eye and neck surgery to avoid blindness.The police denied these allegations on X. “Fake news alert. Reports claiming that police forces are using pellet guns against peaceful protesters are completely false and misleading. The public is strongly advised not to share or circulate unverified content. Please verify facts from official sources before posting or forwarding any information. Appropriate legal action will be taken against individuals found spreading rumours or misinformation,” it said.CJP spokesperson Saurav Dass had alleged Monday on X that Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali J Angmo and a 12 year-old girl were assaulted by cops while she was aboard a truck during the protest. Dass’s post has been withheld. The police called the allegation false and posted on X, “False information is being currently circulated on social media regarding the posts claiming that an individual named Geetanjali, a 12-year-old girl was assaulted, had her hair pulled, sustained a head injury, and approximately 40 to 50 other individuals suffered broken heads. This information is false.”The CJP also alleged Tuesday afternoon that many protesters were detained by police and were not being allowed to meet lawyers. It announced a dharna outside the police headquarters announcing a dharna if constitutional rights of detainees were not adhered to.The police, however, said the claims were incorrect. “Claims circulating on social media regarding persons being detained and denied access to lawyers are misleading and incorrect. It is clarified that no person is currently under detention. You are advised not to share or circulate unverified content,” it said.CJP later said all detainees were allowed to leave and cancelled its dharna.
