The build-up to Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain has been overshadowed by an unexpected opponent — thick wildfire haze drifting south from Canada, prompting air quality alerts across New York and New Jersey and raising questions over whether football’s biggest match could face weather-related disruption. After a tournament repeatedly interrupted by thunderstorms, lightning delays and adverse weather, concerns have now shifted from rain to smoke, with Canadian wildfires blanketing much of the northeastern United States in a dense haze.Authorities in both New York and New Jersey have issued health advisories after air quality reached unhealthy and, at times, “very unhealthy” levels. The New York Office of Emergency Management urged residents to avoid spending more than an hour outdoors as smoke reduced visibility and increased health risks. The World Cup final is scheduled for Sunday at the open-air New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, where organisers are closely monitoring conditions.Despite the alarming scenes, forecasts indicate that improving weather, coupled with expected rainfall on Saturday, should disperse much of the smoke before kickoff, meaning the final is currently expected to proceed as planned.

Spain trains outdoors despite hazardous air

Spain’s preparations continued amid the smoky conditions after the European champions arrived in New Jersey on Wednesday night following their semi-final victory over France. As per an AP report, Luis de la Fuente’s squad trained outdoors in East Hanover on Thursday, even as haze obscured the sun and air quality hovered between “unhealthy” and “hazardous.” Media members were only allowed to observe the opening 15 minutes of the session, making it difficult to assess the intensity of the workout.Argentina, meanwhile, remained in the Atlanta area after defeating England in the semi-final. The defending champions avoided the worst of the smoke because Georgia lies well south of the affected region. Lionel Messi‘s side is due to begin training in New Jersey on Friday.Medical experts questioned the wisdom of outdoor sessions under such conditions.

Smoke adds another challenge before showpiece final

Wildfire smoke has become an increasing environmental concern across North America, with scientists linking longer and more intense fire seasons to a warming climate.Experts say the smoke contains thousands of potentially harmful compounds capable of affecting the lungs, heart and immune system. Even healthy people can experience irritation and breathing difficulties after prolonged exposure, while strenuous exercise significantly increases the amount of polluted air inhaled. The deteriorating air quality has already affected sport in the region. A National Women’s Soccer League match between Gotham FC and Washington Spirit went ahead on Wednesday in nearby Queens, but players were required to take two additional breaks in each half because of the smoky conditions. For FIFA, however, there is growing optimism that Sunday’s final will escape disruption. Air quality forecasts from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency predict conditions will improve to “moderate” by match day, easing fears that the Argentina-Spain showdown could become the latest World Cup fixture affected by extreme weather.
