A festive atmosphere greeted the train’s arrival, with traditional Emirati performances, balloons, complimentary refreshments and photo opportunities creating a celebratory mood at the station.Among those onboard the inaugural service was resident Greeny, who travelled with her family from Fujairah to Abu Dhabi, passing through Sharjah and Dubai. Describing the experience as smooth and comfortable, she praised the onboard hospitality, food and service, calling it a memorable journey for her family.

Public interest in the new rail service has been strong, with Etihad Rail confirming that more than 10,000 tickets were sold before operations officially began.Six passenger services are scheduled to run during the introductory phase on the first day, while most seats on upcoming departures over the next several days have already been booked. The enthusiasm surrounding the launch was evident, with some residents travelling overnight to Fujairah to board the first train and others taking leave from work to be part of the historic event.
Expansion plan already in motion
The Abu Dhabi-Fujairah route is only the first phase of a wider passenger rail rollout. According to Etihad Rail officials, the network will expand in stages over the coming months. The Dubai and Al Dhaid stations are scheduled to open on September 30, 2026, followed by the launch of a station in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region on December 30, 2026.The final phase of the introductory rollout is expected on March 30, 2027, with the opening of the Sharjah University station. Once completed, the network will connect 11 cities and regions across the UAE.
Premium travel experience on board
Passengers can choose between Premium and Comfort travel classes, with all seats reserved in advance. Each seat is equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity and charging ports, while the trains operate using the advanced European Train Control System (ETCS2), allowing high levels of automation, safety and operational efficiency.Officials also highlighted the scenic nature of the route, particularly the views between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, offering travellers a unique perspective of the country’s diverse landscapes.
Seamless connections beyond the railway
Etihad Rail said significant planning has gone into ensuring passengers can easily access stations through an integrated transport network. The company is working with Abu Dhabi Mobility and other transport authorities to connect rail services with buses, taxis, ride-hailing options and public transport systems across the emirates.Future stations are also being designed with connectivity in mind. The Dubai station, for instance, will be located close to a Dubai Metro station, making rail-to-metro transfers more convenient for commuters.
A vision becomes reality
Speaking on the significance of the launch, Etihad Rail officials said the passenger railway is expected to reshape how people travel, live and work across the UAE.“The first departure from Fujairah this morning is the moment a national vision becomes part of everyday life,” an Etihad Rail executive said, adding that the network would create new opportunities for mobility and bring communities closer together.
