New Delhi: A four-year-old girl died after allegedly falling from the 10th floor of a residential building at Asha Kiran Apartments in southeast Delhi’s Govindpuri Saturday evening.The girl, Vanshika Das, was a school student. Her father, Mithun Das, works in a local fish market, while her mother is a homemaker.Police said Mithun was at work and the girl’s mother had gone to a neighbour’s house for a short while when the girl fell off.According to police, the girl’s family was among those that had relocated from Bhoomiheen Camp in 2022 and had been living in a one-room apartment at Asha Kiran Apartments for the past four years. The family resides in the multi-storey, high-rise, residential building along with other rehabilitated families.Police said the PCR call came from A-block of the apartment complex to the Govindpuri police station around 7 pm. A team rushed to the spot and found that the child had already been shifted by residents to Irene Hospital in nearby Kalkaji. The doctors declared her brought dead.“A preliminary inquiry has revealed that the girl was playing alone at home and she went to the balcony. She was looking outside while standing near the railing when she accidentally lost her balance and fell,” a senior police officer said. The girl was reportedly trying to stand on an appliance in the balcony when she fell off.Visuals of the aftermath that surfaced on social media show residents gathered outside the building in panic as police personnel cordoned off the area.Police are examining CCTV footage from the apartment complex and nearby areas and are questioning security guards, residents and the girl’s family to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the fatal fall. Police said no evidence of foul play has surfaced so far. Inquest proceedings have been initiated at the Govindpuri police station.Several such incidents of children accidentally falling to their deaths from residential buildings have been reported across Delhi-NCR over the past few years.In Nov last year, a five-year-old child died after falling from the 22nd floor of Pioneer Presidia, a high-rise residential society in Gurgaon’s Sector 62.In June 2025, a three-year-old boy died after slipping through balcony railings and falling from the fourth floor of a flat in Barola village in Noida’s Sector 49.
