NEW DELHI: Eggs were pelted on Thursday at Udayan Guha, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former West Bengal minister, marking the latest incident of a TMC leader being targeted with eggs after the party was voted out of power in the assembly elections held in April. The incident occurred a day after his arrest in an alleged extortion case.Visuals showed Guha, clad in a white kurta and wearing a helmet, being escorted out of a court in Dinhata by police personnel holding shields. An egg was suddenly hurled at him, but it struck his helmet.Trinamool MP and the party’s second-in-command, Abhishek Banerjee, was the first leader to be targeted days after the TMC’s electoral defeat, which brought an end to his aunt and party supremo Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year tenure as West Bengal chief minister.Senior TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee was struck with eggs a day later. The Trinamool has accused the BJP, which now governs West Bengal, of orchestrating the attacks on its leaders. The BJP, however, has maintained that the incidents reflect public anger over what it describes as years of TMC “misrule.”Guha, son of veteran Forward Bloc leader Kamal Guha, joined the Trinamool Congress in 2016 and later served as a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government.
